Photo Comments

I never did receive any comments on my photos at work. But what would it have sounded like anyway? What should you say to someone about their dead baby? Honestly, I don’t think the questions, or the answers, are actually scary.

Here’s how I imagined it could go.
 
– Aww, he looks just like your husband!
– Yeah, everyone said so.
 
Or
 
– Are those hearts on his cheeks?
– You bet. His nurses would often cut the tapes into cute shapes. Isn’t that sweet?
 
Or
 
– Are these two photos the same?
– Almost, but in this one he’s making his pleasure face, which he made when we rubbed his chin or massaged his feet or did something he liked, and in this one he has his content face, when he’s happily relaxed.
 
Or
 
– What’s he doing in this one?
– He’s telling his dad off! Look at that hand – He’s totally saying “Leave me alone Dad!”.
 
Or
 
– He’s pretty small in this one.
– Yeah, that was the first time I got to hold him, it was amazing.
 
Or
 
– What is this tube for?
– That was part of his ventilator, for breathing. He was much happier when we got this setup.
 
Or
 
– What big blue eyes.
– You can barely see his eyelashes, they were so pale.
 
Or
 
– How old was he here?
– About three months. Almost to his due date.
 
Or
 
– Which one is your favorite?
– All of them!
